9일(이하 현지 시간) 미국 항공우주국(NASA)이 공개한 토성의 달 ‘엔셀라두스’표면. 이 사진은 토성 탐사선 카시니호가 촬영했다.
지난 2005년 엔셀라두스 남극 지역에서 얼음 입자와 수증기로 추정되는 물질이 간헐천처럼 분출하는 것이 발견됐으나, 아직까지 정확한 성분이 무엇인지에 대해서는 밝혀진 바 없다.
카시니호는 12일 엔셀라두스 48Km 이내의 거리까지 근해 다양한 가스 및 입자들의 밀도와 크기, 속도 등을 측정하고 사진을 촬영할 예정이다.
과학자들은 엔셀라두스 분사류에 암모니아 성분이 있느냐에 관심을 갖고 있으며, 암모니아가 발견되면 지하에 물이 존재할 것이라는 가설이 힘을 받게 된다.
