Sir Winston Churchill was accused of covering up a close encounter between an RAF aircraft and a UFO during World War II, the Daily Mail reported Wednesday, citing newly released files.

The former prime minister allegedly ordered that the unexplained incident over the east coast of England should be kept secret for at least 50 years because it would provoke “mass panic.”

The claim, made by a scientist who said his grandfather was one of Churchill's bodyguards, is recounted in declassified Ministry of Defense UFO files made available online by the National Archives, according to the report.

Allegations of the cover-up emerged when the man, from Leicester, wrote to the government in 1999 seeking to find out more about the incident, it said.

He described how his grandfather, who served with the RAF in the war, was present when Churchill and U.S. General Dwight Eisenhower discussed how to deal with the UFO encounter, the report said.

The man, who is not named in the files, said Churchill was reported to have exclaimed, “This event should be immediately classified since it would create mass panic amongst the general population and destroy one's belief in the church.”

The incident allegedly involved an RAF reconnaissance plane returning from a mission in France or Germany towards the end of the war, the newspaper said.

전 영국수상 처칠은 잉글랜드 동부해안에서 발생한 이 사건은 ‘대공항’을 유발할 수 있기 때문에 앞으로 적어도 50년간 비밀에 붙여져야 한다고 했다는 것.

할아버지가 처칠의 경호원이었다고 밝힌 한 과학자가 제기한 이런 주장은 국가기록원이 보관해 왔던 기밀 해제된 국방부 UFO파일에 들어있다.

이런 주장은 이 과학자가 이 사건에 대해 더 많은 정보를 얻기 위해 정부에 편지를 쓰면서 알려졌다고 이 보도는 전했다.

그는 이 책에서 제2차 세계대전 중 영국 공군에서 복무한 그의 할아버지가 처칠과 미국 아이젠하워 장군이 이 사건을 어떻게 할 것인지 논의하는 자리에 참석하게 되었는지를 기술했다.
