수많은 사람들이 몰살당하고... 베트남전 당시 몇 개의 소대가 사라지기도 했던 "로미오 포인트"... 즉 "알 포인트"...

실제 그 곳은 지금도 원혼이 목격된다는 제보가 계속 되고 있으며 실제로 로미오 포인트의 입구에는 "살아서는 돌아갈 수 없다" 라는 글귀가 적혀있다는 귀신들린 밀림이라고 합니다...


지금은 사망한 알버트 에반스라는 베트남 종군기자의 수첩에서 발견된 내용을 토대로...

1971년 6월 20일

긴 전쟁은 이제 서서히 막바지에 다다른 것 같다.

(중략) 그나마 미군은 대부분의 병력을 철수시킨 상황. 현재 남은 부대는 경비여단과 수송대 중심의 비 전투 병력들이다. 지금도 전투 병력이 남아 있는 부대는 한국군뿐. 이미 5천의 젊은 병사를 잃은 한국정부는 미군마저 떠난 이 곳에 또 얼마나 많은 목숨을 바치려는 것일까...?

20:42pm R-Point에서의 전투 소식이 도착했다. 전투에 투입된 인원 총 213명 중 사망 212명. 생존자는 폭파로 두 다리를 잃었으며, 폭약의 파편이 튀어 실명한 상태이다. 현재 전투기록 중 최악의 상황이다.

The long war is slowly coming to a conclusion. North and South Vietnam, as well as the United States, are showing its fatigue during Vietnam’s struggle for independence against the resilient communists. However, The Americans have already begun to withdraw most of their forces. Currently, the core of their remaining military forces is the guards and transportation battalion. Among the conflicts only remaining soldiers are the Koreans. With the American army abandoning the engagement, already the Korean government has lost about 5000 young soldiers. How many more will sacrifice their lives?…

20:42 PM. News about the conflict arrives from R-POINT.
Out of the 213 soldiers committed to the campaign 212 are dead, and one has survived. The survivor lost both legs and both eyes due during an explosion and his condition is near fatal. The 212 dead soldiers…some of the worst seen in this war’s records up to now.



1971년 11월 13일

말라리아에 걸렸던 ‘윌’이 탈수증으로 고생 중이다. 약을 얻기 위해 한국군 야전병원을 찾았다.
평상시와는 달리 병사들의 낮은 술렁거림이 느껴진다. 무슨 일이 일어난 걸까? ... (중략)
지난번 R-point 전투에서 죽은 사망자에 대한 이야기인 것 같다.
남부 텍사스의 거친 액센트를 연상시키는 한국어의 딱딱거리는 발음은 도저히 알아들을 수 없다...(중략).
동양인들은 표정이 풍부하지 않아서 잘 알 수는 없지만 뭔가 좋지 않은 일이 생긴게 분명하다... 더 이상 나쁠 수 없는 상황. 도대체 무슨 일일까? 내일은 본부에 나가 좀 알아봐야겠다.

November 13, 1971
William, suffering from Malaria, is showing signs of dehydration. In desperate need of medicine, I made my way down to the Korean army field hospital. The soldiers seed to be feeling slightly disturbed more so than normal. It feels like something’s about to happen.
Even though I don’t understand Korean, the worlds sound so brash, like he’s speaking German. I believe that this man is the one who knows the story about the dead soldiers during the last skirmish at R-POINT.
Because there are only Asians in the room, it’s difficult to get a read on the situation, but it’s obvious that something terrible is about to go down… Something really horrible. What the hell could it be? I should head to the headquarters to find out what’s happening.

오늘 새벽 02:17. 한국군 사령부에 알 수 없는 무전이 수신됨.
한국군 내부의 소식을 전달해주는 ‘조’는 놀라운 표정으로 비명을 지르는 무전이 수신되었다는 말만 남기고 황급히 사라져버렸다. 비명을 지르는 무전이라니. ...(중략)

결국 ‘윌’은 카메라를 나에게 던져준 채 뉴욕으로 떠났다. 이제 여기에 프레스는 오직 나뿐이다.

2:17 AM .The Korean Army's headquarter received an undecipherable radio transmission. Joe, the internal news transmitter at the Korean headquarters, relays the message as his expression turns to absolute horror and utter hopelessness. It's a radio transmission of absolute horror.

William throws me his camera and takes off for New York . I'm the only one correspondent left.



1971년 12월 3일

오늘 새벽 03:15분 또다시 지난 번 그 괴 무전이 수신되었다고 한다. ‘조’는 더 이상 입을 열지 않는다. 그에게 100달러짜리 지폐를 쥐어주고 발신장소가 어디인지 물었다. 놀랍게도 발신장소는 지난번 최악의 사상자를 내었던 R-point ...(중략)

여기 저기서 R-point 이야기로 술렁이고 있다. 다들 놀란 표정이다.

어젯밤 “전쟁 중 죽은 사람이 다시 좀비로 고향에 돌아온다면..”이라고 윌과 주고받았던 농담이 생각난다. ...(중략)

한국군 강 대위의 면회를 신청했다. 그는 지난 R-point전투의 유일한 생존자이다. 두 다리와 두 눈을 잃어버린 그는 현재 아무런 진술도 하고있지 않다. 들리는 소문에 의하면 전투 후유증에 의한 정신착란증세를 겪고있다고도 한다. 하지만 그의 진술이 필요하다.

그가 R-point 밀림에서 본 그것이 이 알 수 없는 사건의 실마리라는 생각이 든다.

December 3, 1971

This morning at 3:15 AM , another mysterious transmission comes in similar to last time. It's filled with static, gunfire, panic and chaos. Frightened, Joe can no longer speak. I peel off a $100 bill and ask him to tell me where the message is being transmitted from. I'm stunned to find out that the transmission is being dispatched from the location where the worst casualties occurred, R-POINT.
There are disturbing stories from R-POINT all the way back to here, a different kind of startling story. Last night, William played with the idea of "what if the people who died in the war returned to their hometowns as zombies...”
I requested a meeting with the Captain Kang of the Korean army. He is oddly the sole survivor from the previous R-POINT conflict. He has lost both his legs as well as both his eyes, and presently has not made a statement to anyone. The rumor going around is that he is experiencing some symptoms of post-war psychological stress due to the traumatic incident. However, a statement is needed by him. A statement about what he saw in the R-POINT jungle is the first step in figuring out just what happened in the mysterious incident.

그저 같은 병실을 쓰는 최태인 중위와 한국어로 무어라 주고받을 뿐. 그러나 그것 역시 중요한 이야기는 아닌 것 같다.

최중위와 복도에서 몇 마디 이야기를 나눴다. 뜻밖에 그는 능숙한 영어를 구사한다.

그가 말하길, 강대위는 R-point에서 일어난 일은 조금도 말하려 하지 않는다고 한다.
그 누구에게도... 강 대위가 마지막으로 본 그것이 나는 궁금하다. ...(중략)

December 10, 1971

Today, even though Captain Kang agreed to an interviewed, he doesn't open his mouth, not even a crack. He must have gotten orders from the higher-ups. The only person he's spoken to in the infirmary, about God only knows what because they speak only in Korean, is First Lieutenant Choi. However, I absolutely believe he has some pertinent information. I took the lieutenant out into the hallway to ask him about some things. Unexpectedly, he breaks out in proficient English. He informs me that he doesn't even want to say a word about the events that happened to Captain Kang at R-POINT. I'm extremely curious as to the last thing Captain Kang saw...everyone must be.

다시 지난번과 같은 상황이다. 아침에 “조”가 말하길 간밤에 다시 한번 그 무전이 수신되었다고 한다.
이번에는 “무전실이 완전 통제가 되어서 전혀 접근할 수 없었다.”고 한다.
그에게 다시 100달러를 쥐어주며, 무전의 내용을 알아다 달라고 주문했다.
그러나 이번엔 오히려 그가 아무 것도 알 수 없다며, 달러를 거절했다.

December 20, 1971

It's been the same situation since last time. Joe tells me that last night the radio transmitted once again. This time though, the radio receiving room was being monitored by so many that it was unapproachable. Again I peeled off a $100 bill and handed it to him asking about to contents of the message. This time, however, he told me that he couldn't relay the information and refused the bribe.



1971년 12월 23일

한국군 CID 이 대령은 이미 한국전 때 인연을 맺은 친구이다. 그러나 오늘, 그는 나의 등장을 꺼려하는 표정이 역력하다. 왜 내가 자신을 찾아 왔는지 그는 이미 알고 있었다. 그는 끝내 답변을 거부하지만, R-point 전투의 유일한 생존자 강대위를 이대령의 문앞에서 마주친 순간 그 괴무전 사건과 그와 연관이 있음을 직감했다.(중략)

내가 그로부터 확인하고 싶었던 것은 실종된 병사들에 대한 처리여부이다. 버릴 것인지, 찾을 것인지... 이 대령은 분명 R-point에서 살아남은 사람은 오로지 강 대위뿐이라고 재차 확인해주었다. 심한 폭발로 인해 강 대위가 살아남은 것 자체가 신기한 일이라면서.

이 대령과 긴 면담 끝에 일단 이 괴 무전에 대한 기사는 R-point에 대한 수색작전 여부에 따라 송고하기로 합의했다. 물론 한국군에 대한 우호적인 내용으로... ... (중략)

December 23, 1971

Today I met with Colonel Lee of the Korean Army's CID division, a man I formed a friendship with since the Korean War. But today however, it's easy to see that he is uneasy about my presence there. He already knows why I have come to see him. As he concluded his explanation about why he was refusing to speak to me, Captain Kang, the sole survivor of the R-POINT conflict, appeared in the doorway of the Colonel's office, and that's when I began to realize the connection between the mysterious radio transmissions and the captain.
That's when I began to decide whether or not I wanted to deal with the matter of the missing military details. Am I going to give up, or search for this information? For a second time, Colonel Lee exclusively confirmed that Captain Kang was the only living survivor from R-POINT. It's unexplainable how Captain Kang could be the only one to survive such a strong explosion leaving a sea of corpses. At the end of the long interview with Colonel Lee, an agreement was reached to send an investigative unit to check out this mysterious report about the radio transmissions from R-POINT. Of course with a spin to show the Korean Army in the best light …



1971년12월30일

이제 월남전은 워싱턴과 북부 월맹 사이의 지루한 정치적 협상만이 남아 있을 뿐이다. 아마도 1년 내에 호치민은 400년 동안의 식민지였던 사이공을 해방시킬 것이다...(중략).

더 이상의 전쟁은 없다. 그리고 어쩌면... 이것이 월남전에서의 마지막 취재가 될지 모른다. 내일, 나는 최 중위와 8명의 한국군 수색대를 따라 알 포인트로 들어간다. 결국 CID 이 대령은 알 포인트 실종병사들의 생사를 확인키로 한 모양이다. 방치해 두기엔 확산되는 부대원들 사이에는 이미 소문이 나있는 상태 수일 전, 시내 창녀촌에서 일어난 총격사건에 연루된 최 중위가 모두가 피하는 이 작전을 뒤집어 쓴 모양이다.

December 30, 1971

The only thing left of the war these days is the tedious political negotiations between Washington and the North Vietnamese. And within one year, Ho Chi Min will liberate Saigon which has been colonized for the past 400 years …
After that, there'll be no more war. And no one knows…if this is the final material to come out of the Vietnam War. Tomorrow, I will travel along with Lieutenant Choi and eight member of a Korean military investigation party into R-POINT. Finally, it seems as though Colonel Lee from CID is going to confirm whether the missing soldiers from R-POINT are still living or dead. Word has already spread among the soldiers of this classified investigation. Lieutenant Choi is carrying out this duty as a punishment for a shooting spree that occurred several days prior at the brothel.

11시, 서부해안 20km 지점, 알 포인트 해안에 도착...(중략). 15시, 좌표에 나타나지 않은 작은 마을로 접근 중 첫 교전...(중략).

사살된 시신들은... 그러나 이미 죽은지 오래된 듯 상당부분 부패가 진행 중 고온 다습한 지역 점을 고려해도 이미 시체들은 죽은지 열흘 이상 지난 것들 뿐 ... (중략) 시신 확인 중 시체더미 사이에서 살아남은 12세 가량의 소녀 발견. 총격으로 피범벅이 된 얼굴임에도 분명하게 드러나는 것은 비웃음이었다. 숨을 헐떡이고 있었지만, 살리기에는 총상이 너무 깊다. 몇 번이고 총부리를 겨눠보지만, 누구도 총을 쏘지 못한다.

결국 괴로워하는 아이를 두고 돌아섰다...(중략). 분명 마을 입구 11시 방향과 3시 방향, 양쪽에서 동시에 AK 반자동 소총의 총격이 있었다. 당연히 소녀병사 외에 누군가 있어야 설명이 된다. 최 중위에게 피격된 시신들의 상태에 대해 의견을 물어보지만 그는 내 질문을 막아버린다. 이미 공포에 빠져있는 병사들의 눈치를 살피는 듯 하다...(중략)

December 31, 1971. 16:27

11 o'clock, we arrive on the outskirts of R-POINT , a point 20 kilometers in from the Southern coast… 15 o'clock , while approaching a small village, its coordinates not even appearing on a map, we enter our first engagement…
Corpses all dead by shooting…Considering it's only been no more than 10 days since death, the high temperature and humidity of this place has sped up the decomposing process to make the corpses look further along… In the middle of inspecting a dead body, under a pile of corpses, a boy who looks to be about 12 or so is found still alive. On his bloody mess of a face a cynical smile is clearly apparent. Even though he is still gasping for air, the gunshot wound looks too deep to save him. Many of the bodies are pointing their weapons, but none of them ever fired a shot. Finally, I turned my back on the suffering young boy.
At a village entrance, 11 o'clock and another at 3 o'clock, simultaneously from both directions there is AK rifle fire. There must obviously be someone shooting from above the dead young female soldier to explain the situation. I begin to ask Lieutenant Choi how the corpses are firing on him, but he stops my questioning. In the search team soldier's eyes there is a look of fear…



1971년 12월 31일 20:30

가슴까지 빠지는 늪지대를 지나야 했지만 다행히 카메라는 방수포 덕에 젖지 않았다. 그러나 전방 5M 앞을 식별할 수 없는 안개 때문에 밀림 속에서 캠프를 치기로 결정. 모기떼들에 다들 곤욕을 치르고 있다. 바르는 모기약을 써 보지만 이곳 모기들에겐 향수처럼 느껴지는 모양이라는 어린 병사의 말에 다들 웃고 만다...(중략).

오후, 늪지대를 지나 목격한 비문이 궁금해진다. 그 비문에 새겨진 중국문자들의 의미를 묻자 최 중위는 ‘不歸 - 돌아갈 수 없다’라는 뜻이라고 말해준다. 지난 프랑스와의 독립전쟁 당시 세워진 비석 같다...(중략)

어제 본 시신들과 죽어가던 소녀병사. 실종된 병사들로부터 걸려온 무전.

그리고 이상한 글씨가 쓰여진 비문까지... 하지만, 수색대원들은 이런 것들보단, 7일후 돌아갈 생각뿐인 것 같다.

그러나 내가 떠나기 전 나에게 Rice Paper를 팔던 노파는 R-point의 밀림에서 수십 년 전에 600명의 프랑스 병사가 사라진 일을 이야기해주었다. 노파는 베트남의 피를 손에 묻힌 자는 그곳에서 돌아올 수가 없다며 나에게 가지 말 것을 권했었다.

하지만 나는 루터교를 신봉하는 아일랜드 인이다. 그러한 근거 없는 이야기는 믿지 않는다.


December 31, 1971. 20:30

Even though we traversed a marshy area up to our chests, lucky the camera in its waterproof case didn ' t get wet. Then in the jungle, five meters up ahead of us through a fog so dense it ' s hard to decipher things clearly, a camp is somehow spotted. A swarm of mosquitoes constantly attack us. Even though we rub on mosquito repellant, the younger soldiers laugh at the fact that the mosquitoes react to the repellant is if it were perfume. In the afternoon, coming out of the marsh area I observe a curious inscription on a marker. I ask Lieutenant Choi about the meaning of the inscription engraved in Chinese characters.
He tells me that it states, “ The Point of No Return ” . It looks like a gravestone put up during the past Independence War with France .
The corpses and the dead young female soldier seen yesterday … the missing soldier ' s radio transmission … the strange engraving on the gravestone … In any case, even though the investigative team witnessed these things their only thought is of returning after seven days. Before I leave, an old woman who sold me Rice Paper tells me a story about 600 French soldiers who disappeared from R-POINT ' s jungle dozens of years ago. The old woman, a person whose hands are stained with the blood of her country and would not be able to get out from there, advises me not to go in. But I'm an Irishman of Lutheran faith. Those tales have no effect on me.



1972년 1월 1일 R-point 수색 2일 째 13:00pm

베트남 오지에서 새해를 맞는다.

오늘은 마치 고대 아즈텍 문명을 찾아 나선 탐험대원이 된 듯한 느낌이다.
동이 트고 온도가 올라가자 두껍게 깔린 안개가 사라졌다. 안개가 걷히자마자 우리 코앞에 프랑스 풍의 거대한 석조건물이 서 있었다.

우리가 수색기간동안 이용할 거점 지역이다. 오랜 기간동안 아무도 살지 않았던 듯 검붉은 이끼가 잔뜩 끼어있다. 내부도...음침하기 짝이 없다. 수십개의 복도가 갈라져있어, 한번 잘못 들어서면 제자리로 돌아오기도 힘들다‘. (중략)

어젯밤엔 무전기가 고장나, 한밤에 작은 소동이 있었다. 다들... 이곳에 들어온 후 민감해져가고 있다.

January 1, 1972
R-POINT Investigation, second day. 13:00 PM .
I greet the new year in Vietnam 's backcountry. Today it feels as if we are apart of an expedition party searching for an Aztec civilization. With my canteen empty, the heat rises and a thick fog rolls in. As the thick fog beings to lift, right in front of our noses stands a massive French style stone building. We can use this as a stronghold during our investigation. It looks as if no one has lived here for a long time from the massive amount of dark-red moss growing along the building.
The inside…somber. There are dozens of corridors branching off. If you make a wrong turn, it would be nearly impossible to return.
Last night we had a small incident. Our radio malfunctioned. Everyone, after entering this place, has become more sensitive to the things around them.



1972년 1월 1일 R-point 수색 3일 째 20:05pm

조금 전 내가 본 것은 대체 무엇인가?

거점 지역 7시 방향 갈대 숲 사이... '그것'을 무엇이라 해야 하나? '그들'이라고 해야하나...?
옅은 안개가 있었지만 그것은 안개는 아니다.

절대 ... 그리고 ... 딸랑거리는 방울소리가 끊이지 않고 들린다... 나만 듣는걸까?(중략)

저녁시간, 구석에 말없이 앉아있는 조 상병의 시선이 불안하게 떨리는 것을 보았다. 그도 내가 본 것을... 본 걸까?

도대체 누가 내 말을 믿을 것인가?

21:19pm
밤이 되자, 갑자기 비와 함께 번개가 몰아치기 시작했다. 최중위가 갑자기 밖으로 뛰어나갔다.

January 1, 1972

R-POINT Investigation, third day. 20:05 PM.
What the hell was that thing I saw a moment ago? Our position is seven o'clock in a forest of reeds. Should I say that the thing I saw was “something?” Or was it “someone?” Even though there is pale fog in the air, it wasn't the fog. Also, there is the eerie sound of a bell that doesn't stop. Am I the only one hearing that?
It's evening, and in the corner Joe sits trembling without a sound sick and wounded. Could he have seen what I saw? Who in the world would believe me?
21:19 PM .
As soon as night falls, rain begins to fall along with lightning strikes. All of a sudden Lieutenant Choi runs outside.

R-point 수색 작전 중 첫 사망자 발생.

예리한 철사줄로 저택 지붕에 목이 매달린 정일병의 시체를 저택앞에서 발견했다. 한국군 본부로 긴급하게 무전을 송신.

나는 더욱 놀라운 소식을 접했다.

아버지의 사망... 두 죽음 앞에 나는 정신없이 이 대령이 보내준 헬기에 올라타고 R-point를 빠져 나왔다....(중략).

현재 시간 14:30pm 뉴욕 발 비행기 출발 20분전

2시간 전, 난 CID 이 대령으로부터 이별 선물을 받았다.

어제 발견된 R-point 수색 작전 첫 사망자는 이미 6개월 전 실종된 부대원 중에 한 명이라는 것...
그러나 불과 2일 전, 난 그와 담배를 나눠 피웠었다!!. ... 아니, 그런 것 같다...(중략)


난 내가 본 것을 머리에 담아두지 않는다. 이해하려는 부질없는 노력도 하지 않는다. 그래야만 전쟁은 기록될 수 있다...

January 2, 1972 17:27 PM.

During our R-POINT investigation, we see the first occurrence of a casualty. In front of the house, Private Jung's corpse hangs from a sharp wire by his neck. A message is urgently relayed to the Korean Army's Headquarters. I've never seen anything worse than this. Father's death…
In a helicopter sent by Colonel Lee, I ride in the front with two dead bodies and get the hell out of R-POINT…
Present time: 14:30 PM .
A plane destined for New York , departed 20 minutes before.
The one corpse found by the investigative team is of a soldier who has been missing for six months…
But two days prior, I was smoking a cigarette with him!

I don't want to remember anything that I saw. I don't even try to make sense of any of it. That's the only way the war can be documented…
