Ancient patterns similar to Nazca Lines have been found in the Middle East, Live Science (http://www.livescience.com), a science website based in the United States reported Wednesday.

The Nazca Lines located in southern Peru are a series of ancient geoglyphs which cannot be spotted on the ground but can be clearly seen from the sky.

Researchers have discovered the Middle East's own version of the Nazca Lines that span deserts in Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. They expect the lines were made at least 2,000 years ago with stones.

These stone structures, ranging from 25 to 70 meters across, have a variety of designs. Referred to by archaeologists as "wheels,” some of them are circle-shaped with more than one wheel.

Others are rectangular and are not wheels at all. Scientists believe that the ancient people made these pictures because of religious beliefs or for astronomical rituals.

고대인들이 신앙 숭배의 차원에서 새나 짐승 등을 새겨 놓은 것으로 지상에선 식별이 안 되지만 공중에서 보면 확연히 드러나는 거대한 지상의 그림이다. 그런데 이와 비슷한 고대 문양이 중동 지역에서도 발견됐다고 미국 과학전문 웹사이트 라이브사이언스닷컴이 14일 보도했다.

중동판 나스카 라인은 시리아와 요르단, 사우디아라비아 등 광대한 사막 지역에서 무더기로 관찰됐다.

최소 2000년 전 사막 위에 돌로 만든 것으로 추정되는 이 고대 문양은 지름이 작은 것은 25m, 큰 것은 70m에 이른다. 여러 개의 바퀴살이 있는 둥근 바퀴 모양인데 바퀴가 하나만 있는 것도 있고 수십 개가 모여 있는 것도 있다.

일부 사각형 바퀴나 바퀴살이 거의 없는 모양도 있다. 학자들은 신앙 목적이나 천문의식을 위해 만든 것일 가능성이 크다고 보고 있다.
