무려 13m 이집트 파라오 ‘거대 조각상’ 발굴 > 미스테리

Archaeologists discovered one of the largest statues ever found of a powerful ancient Egyptian pharaoh at his mortuary temple in the southern city of Luxor, the antiquities authority of Egypt announced Wednesday.

The 13 meter-tall statue of Amenhotep III was one of a pair that stood at the northern entrance to the grand temple on the west bank of the Nile that is currently the focus of a major excavation.

The 3,400-year-old temple is one of the largest, where the powerful pharaohs of Egypt’s New Kingdom built their tombs.

The statue consists of seven large quartzite blocks and still lacks a head. It was actually first discovered in the 1928 but was soon re-hidden, according to a press release from the country’s antiquities department. Archaeologists expect to find its twin in the next digging season.

Ahmenhotep III, the grandfather of the famed boy-pharaoh Tutankhamun, ruled in the 14th century B.C. at the height of Egypt’s New Kingdom and reined over a vast empire stretching from Nubia in the south to Syria in the north.

The pharaoh’s temple was largely destroyed possibly by floods, and little remains of its walls. It was also devastated by an earthquake in 27 B.C.

“Two other statues have also been found. One is of the god Thoth with a baboon’s head and the other is a 1.85-meter lion-headed goddess Sekhmet,” excavation supervisor Abdel-Ghaffar Wagdi said.



무려 13m 이집트 파라오 ‘거대 조각상’ 발굴

역대 발굴된 고대 이집트 파라오상 가운데 가장 거대한 크기를 자랑하는 조각상이 최근 출토돼 고고학계의 비상한 관심을 받고 있다.

이집트 유물관리 당국은 “장례의식을 치렀던 3400년 된 룩소르신전에서 제 18왕조의 아멘호테프 3세의 조각상이 출토됐다.”고 지난 27일(현지시간) 발표했다.

사료에 따르면 고대 이집트 제18왕조 제9대 왕인 아멘호테프 3세는 교묘한 외교로 아시아 여러 나라와도 우호관계를 쌓고 교역을 활발히 해 신전과 궁전을 건축했다.

이번에 발견된 조각상은 높이가 무려 13m로 역대 발견된 것 가운데 가장 큰 규모. 거대한 규석벽돌 7장으로 구성돼 있었으며, 이중 하나는 신전 북쪽 입구에 놓여 있었으나 기원전 27년 지진으로 파괴된 것으로 추정된다.

1928년 처음 그 존재가 알려진 이 조각상은 머리가 사라진 상태다. 이번 출토작업의 총책임자인 압델 가파왁디는 “어딘가 남겨져 있을 이 조각상의 쌍둥이를 찾는 동시에 파괴된 부분을 매만져 원래의 장소에 재건할 계획”이라고 밝혔다.

한편 이외에도 고대 이집트 신화 속 지혜의 신 ‘토트’와 사자머리를 한 파괴와 재상의 여신 ‘세크멘트’ 등의 조각상 2개가 추가로 발견됐다.
