The New Zealand military released hundreds of previously classified reports Wednesday detailing claims of unidentified flying object (UFO) sightings and alien encounters, AFP reported Wednesday.

In about 2,000 pages of documents, members of the public, military personnel and commercial pilots outline close encounters, mostly involving moving lights in the sky, the report said.

Some of the accounts include drawings of flying saucers, descriptions of aliens wearing "pharaoh masks" and alleged examples of extraterrestrial writing, it said.

The incident made international headlines at the time but a contemporary Air Force report found it could be explained by natural phenomena such as lights from boats being reflected off clouds or an unusual view of the planet Venus, AFP said.

One of the most comprehensive files concerns two sightings of strange lights off the South Island town of Kaikoura in 1978, one of which was captured by a television crew aboard a plane in the area, according to the report.

뉴질랜드 군 당국이 미확인비행물체(UFO) 목격과 외계인 접촉 등에 관한 기밀보고서 수백건을 공개했다고 AFP 통신이 22일 보도했다.

1954-2009년 작성된 이들 2000 페이지에 달하는 보고서에서 공무원과 군 관계자, 민간항공기 조종사 등이 하늘에서 빛을 내며 움직이는 물체를 목격했다는 내용이 주를 이루고 있다고.

일부 보고서에는 목격된 비행접시 그림과 `파라오 가면'을 쓴 외계인에 관한 묘사, 외계인이 쓴 것으로 추정되는 글자 등 자료를 포함하고 있다고 이 보도는 전했다.

당시 각국 언론은 큰 관심을 보였으나 뉴질랜드 공군 보고서는 구름에 반사된 빛 등 자연현상이나 범상한 금성의 모습일 개연성이 있다고 일축했다고.
