미국 항공우주국(NASA)이 13일 공개한 이 사진에서, 과학자들은 NASA 화성 탐사 로봇 스피릿이 화성의 컬럼비아 힐스(Columbia Hills)에서 조사한 기반암(基盤岩)에서 화성에 한때 물이 존재했음을 보여주는 괴시트(Goethite)란 한 광물을 확인했다.

스피릿이 맡고 있는 화성의 탐사 지역에서 컬럼비아 힐스는 화성의 물의 역사를 찾기위한 가장 확실한 지표들중 하나로 간주되고 있다. 스피릿과 그 쌍둥이 탐사 로봇 오퍼튜니티는 화성의 물의 역사에 대한 지리학적 증거를 찾기위해 화성에 보내졌다.

이 두 탐사 로봇들, 그중에서도 특히 오퍼튜니티는, 화성 지표면에 대한 근 1년간의 탐사중 그같은 증거를 발견했다. 그러나 괴시트의 발견은 특히 중요하다고 이 탐사를 맡고 있는 한 과학자가 NASA 제트 추진 연구소(JPL) 성명을 통해 말했다
